Jay Wright’s top assistant coach, Ashley Howard will be the next La Salle head men’s basketball head coach in Philadelphia.

Villanova head coach Jay Wright of Howard said, “He’s bright; he’s a basketball lifer.” Further, he added, “He’s an outstanding recruiter, he’s a very good X-and-O guy. Great teacher on the court and the kind of person you like to have to lead your program and be a representative of your university.”

He has always shown prominent interest in the position and he was always one of La Salle’s top targets. Ashley Howard’s first college coaching job was an assistant at La Salle.

Ashley Howard said, “It’s an honor and a privilege to be named the head coach at La Salle University. I chose to coach at La Salle early in my career because of its incredible tradition in the Big 5, its dedication to athletic excellence and its commitment to its student-athletes.”

From 2004 to 2008, Howard takes over the La Salle program having served as an assistant. He was Jay Wright’s top assistant and prior before that he was an assistant with Drexel.

Jay Wright said in the statement, “Ashley is an outstanding coach who made a great impact on our program and university in his five years with us.” Further, he added, “His passion for mentoring young men and teaching skill has been invaluable in our team’s development.”

During his time at Villanova, Howard has been a part of two national title runs mainly consists of three Big East Tournament.
